The games art style is a tribute to 1930’s cartoons and the gameplay mechanics are a mish-mash of 90’s shoot-em-up side scrollers such as Contra, Metal Slug and Gunstar Heros (more so the latter) and though there are a few ‘Run and Gun’ levels which involve platforming, collecting coins, shooting/avoiding enemies until you reach the end of the level, the games main focus is on boss fights, each being very unique from the last. This game isn’t just a masterpiece in terms of its artistic, audio and visual work, the games design and gameplay shines just as much as those do. Play as Cuphead or Mugman (in single player or local co-op) as you traverse strange worlds, acquire new weapons, learn powerful super moves, and discover hidden secrets while you try to pay your debt back to the devil! traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.
